Mike Schpitz – Love Potion Number 9th

3 03 2010

Last week or so, I found out about this dude from the midwest. His name’s Mike Schpitz, and he also goes by LoveJones. He’s a sick artist, and he’s definitely worth listening to. Free mixtape download at the bottom.

I first heard a few tracks from Mike Schpitz on the Flawless Hustle mixtape Stay Flawless. I thought he was pretty good, but I wasn’t completely sold. About a month later, I found out that he released a mixtape where he went over 9th Wonder beats, so I had to have that. It’s called Love Potion Number 9th, and it’s been one of my most played mixtapes over the past month.

“Hatin’ Again” is one of my favorite tracks off the mixtape. Stik Figa and Adullessence are featured on it, and they add a whole new dimension to the track. The beat is incredible, and that goes for every beat on this mixtape. As a matter of fact, that goes for pretty much 9th’s whole catalog.

Either way, it’s definitely worth downloading, especially since it’s free. And while you’re at it, follow Mike Schpitz on Twitter. Kudos to Refined Hype for the download.

Oddisee – Odd Winter

25 01 2010

Man, we’ve got quite a week lined up on everydaymusic. Lots of good, free mixtape downloads. It starts today with Oddisee‘s Odd Winter, the third in his seasonal series. Spoiler alert: it’s good as fuck.

Odd Winter has 13 tracks, eight of which are instrumentals. The other five feature some dope artists, including a personal favorite of mine, Stik Figa. “Riiight” is the track that Stik is on, and he pretty much demolished the track. I was afraid my iPod was gonna explode from the sheer amount of linguistic domination. It didn’t. But it came damn close.

Of the instrumental tracks, “All Because She’s Gone” is probably my favorite. The interjecting horns are incredibly dope, and it’s just a brilliant beat. The entire time, I was imagining A Tribe Called Quest ripping this beat. “Blizzard of 09” is a really close second for favorite beat. It’s the last track on the mixtape and rightfully so. So sweet, so soulful, yet so ominous; a brilliant way to cap it off.

Honestly, I could waste your time and talk about every single track and how much I love it, but I figure I’ll let you get your ears on it. I guarantee you’ll love this mixtape. This is definitely my favorite of the seasonal series so far. We owe a huge thank you to Oddisee for making awesome music. (Oh, and if you don’t have the other two mixtapes in the series, get them: Odd Summer & Odd Autumn)

Stik Figa

14 12 2009

Recently, I’ve been bad at updating this on time. My last exam is tonight, so hopefully I’ll be able to be a little more on top of things soon. Having said that, today’s article is about Stik Figa. There’s a link to a free mixtape at the end, so at the very least, get that.

I found out about Stik Figa through a MelloMusicGroup tweet. I’ve gotta confess, I clicked his name because it reminded me of stic.man. You can visit Stik Figa’s official blog. Look around, there might be some good stuff. It’s where I found the mixtape.

The mixtape’s called Hello, Goodbye, and it’s produced by D/Will. It’s all out of Kansas City, Missouri, which isn’t the first place I’d think to look for hip-hop, but these dudes are holding it down. The production is super clean, and the flow is smooth. The overall feel of the album is pretty somber, dealing with suicide and whatnot, but it’s done very tactfully.

“Happy” and “Goodbye–Credits” are probably my favorite tracks. I especially love the beats on these tracks. “Goodbye–Credits” is almost eight minutes long, and it includes three different beats. The best beat of the entire album is the last one on this track. It plays the album out, with no words over it or anything. A perfect ending to a great mixtape.

Also, “Starched Dickies” has a video that you can watch. It’s pretty dope. I also found this video of D/Will and Stik Figa live. Watch it.

You should definitely download the mixtape, especially considering it’s free. Stik Figa and D/Will deliver. It’s called Hello, Goodbye, and you can get it for free right here.
