The Reeflex – Sparktones: The Catcher in the Rye

5 03 2010

One day a month, I am willing to shamelessly promote myself. Today is that day. My new beat tape is available for free download. Download link is at the bottom.

The tape is called Sparktones – The Catcher in the Rye, and it’s the last of the Sparktones series. I’m trying to release about a tape a month, and this is February’s edition. Next month’s project is already in the works. I’m hoping to use more soul samples in it. Try to make it sound like more conventional hip hop. But for now, you can download what’s already on the bandcamp. There’re four beat tapes up there. If you’re an MC interested in using a beat, let me know. I can adjust them to go however you want (take stuff out, add stuff, etc), and I don’t charge.

D/Will – Heir of Abraham

29 01 2010

We conclude this week with another free mixtape download. That’s five free downloads in the last five days, folks. You should be listening to good music by now. It’s the first mixtape D/Will has up on his bandcamp, all the way back from April 2008. An oldie, but a goodie.

I first heard of D/Will when he worked with Stik Figa on Hello, Goodbye. That’s a phenomenal mixtape, too. You should get it. But that’s not what this post is about. The mixtape I’m telling you about today is called Heir of Abraham. D/Will‘s beats are as solid as ever, proving that he’s consistent when it comes to his production.

“Good Evening” is my favorite complete track off Heir of Abraham. I say “complete” track because I feel like this is the track where the instrumental and the lyrics blend together the best. But don’t get me wrong. I really like all of the production on this release. It’s practically flawless.

Oddisee – Odd Winter

25 01 2010

Man, we’ve got quite a week lined up on everydaymusic. Lots of good, free mixtape downloads. It starts today with Oddisee‘s Odd Winter, the third in his seasonal series. Spoiler alert: it’s good as fuck.

Odd Winter has 13 tracks, eight of which are instrumentals. The other five feature some dope artists, including a personal favorite of mine, Stik Figa. “Riiight” is the track that Stik is on, and he pretty much demolished the track. I was afraid my iPod was gonna explode from the sheer amount of linguistic domination. It didn’t. But it came damn close.

Of the instrumental tracks, “All Because She’s Gone” is probably my favorite. The interjecting horns are incredibly dope, and it’s just a brilliant beat. The entire time, I was imagining A Tribe Called Quest ripping this beat. “Blizzard of 09” is a really close second for favorite beat. It’s the last track on the mixtape and rightfully so. So sweet, so soulful, yet so ominous; a brilliant way to cap it off.

Honestly, I could waste your time and talk about every single track and how much I love it, but I figure I’ll let you get your ears on it. I guarantee you’ll love this mixtape. This is definitely my favorite of the seasonal series so far. We owe a huge thank you to Oddisee for making awesome music. (Oh, and if you don’t have the other two mixtapes in the series, get them: Odd Summer & Odd Autumn)

Sparktones – The Stranger

18 01 2010

Happy MLK Day. It’s that day of the month again. The day when I shamelessly promote my own music. My third mixtape has dropped today, and it’s free. You should get it.

This mixtape is the second in the Sparktones series, which is probably gonna have one more mixtape in the series. Maybe two, we’ll see what happens. The first one was named after Orwell’s 1984. This one is named after Albert Camus’s The Stranger, and it has 11 tracks. Ten of them contain samples, and one of them is original material, but the original track is almost a year old now.

I feel like I slacked hardcore on today’s post, but I don’t really have much else to say. I mean, it’s my work, so I’m not going to talk about the tracks. It’s not professional enough for me to have any concepts or anything. Download it. Hopefully you’ll like it. Oh, and if you want to use a beat, just let me know. I can make it as long as you want, remove whatever, add whatever, etc. My info is on the contact page.

Sparktones – 1984

18 12 2009

Am I cheating with this post? Technically, yes, but a bit of shameless self-promotion never hurt anyone. It’s another free mixtape download on everydaymusic. That’s 4 in 5 days, mind you. Be thankful.

So, this mixtape is my December mixtape. It’s called Sparktones – 1984, and it consists of 10 hip-hop instrumentals, created by yours truly. If you want to use a track for a mixtape of your own, let me know, and we’ll get it all arranged. My contact information is on the Contact page. Makes sense, right?

Like I said, the download’s free, so you’ve got nothing to lose. You can visit the bandcamp site to get it. It’ll be on the latest album, but there’s a menu on the right side of the screen, and if you click on Instrumentals, you can also download the mixtape I released in November. I didn’t know about reverb or mixing or mastering or anything at the time, so sorry if the levels are off. Either way, I really appreciate any support I get. I don’t see it getting many downloads, but currently, the plan is to release a mixtape a month, consisting of at least 10 tracks. Hopefully by like September 2010 I’ll have around 100 tracks uploaded on the web. That’s it. Thanks!
