Yo, it’s Labor Day. I was thinking about taking a break, but fuck it, I’ma get my labor on. Today, I’m gonna talk about Mayer Hawthorne, a new soul artist out of Ann Arbor, Michigan. It’s a case of teaching a new dog some old tricks. Flipped it!
I first heard about Mayer Hawthorne sometime around the beginning of this year. “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out” is his first single (released 4 November 2008), and it was the first song I heard. It’s definitely a catchy tune, and it’s received praise from the ever so popular Mark Ronson. A Strange Arrangement is the title of Hawthorne’s debut album, which is set to drop this Tuesday (8 September 2009, to be exact). I can’t wait to get my hands on the album and give it a listen. If I manage to find it, there’s a very strong possibility that I’ll review it on here.
“Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out” is really a great song. The harmonies are killer in this song, but that’s true for most of Hawthorne’s work. There’s a clear focus on the vocals in his music, but that doesn’t mean that the instrumentals are slacking. Although it’s not necessarily intricate, the instrumental part of “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out” is smooth, catchy, and bouncy, making it super fun to listen to. Fun fact: the record is heart-shaped.
Mayer Hawthorne is an artist who you should definitely listen to. I think his appeal is purely musical. By that I mean if you have any respect for music at all, you’ll respect this guy. He’s an incredibly talented individual, and he has multiple side-projects, including hip-hop acts Haircut (solo) and Now On (group).
And here’s some great news. Mayer Hawthorne is kicking off a tour, playing sets all over the USA. He’ll be playing a bunch of shows out in California and then working his way in a clockwise motion around the United States. For all you Florida residents, Hawthorne will be coming through Orlando on 7 October 2009. The show will be at The Social, and it’ll begin at 9 PM. I’m not really clear on the price, but I’m sure it’ll be reasonable. I’m interested to see if the incredible vocals can be replicated in a live setting. If he can do that, then he’s serious.
Mayer Hawthorne is a very talented artist, and he’s definitely worth listening to. Be sure to find his first album, A Strange Arrangement. You can purchase a cheap MP3 album download right from the Stone’s Throw website. His music provides a great soundtrack to life, love, and everything in between. It can be either uplifting and quick or a bit slower and more mellow. Get some Mayer Hawthorne on your pod, and bump it, loud and clear. Peace.
